The new exhibition - 5,500 square feet in size - is housed
in the Golden Mile Centre on the Central Promenade in Blackpool, next
door to the Sea Life Centre and very close to the site of the original
attraction. Devised and created by Experience Design Ltd, as an interactive,
walk-through exhibition, it has original props and costumes from the
series, including several of the Doctor's best-known adversaries; Daleks,
Cybermen, Sea Devils and many of the gadgets that appeared on the show
over the years, such as the Third Doctor's yellow roadster 'Bessie'
and a replica of the centre console of the TARDIS. The displays cover
a wide variety of characters and costumes from the programme.

Blackpool
businessman and long-term sci-fi fan, David Boyle is delighted to be hosting
the exhibition. He commented, "It's perfect timing, exactly 30 years since
the original Doctor Who exhibition opened here in Blackpool and interest
in the series and in all things sci-fi is as strong as ever. We are confident
we have a fascinating exhibition, guaranteed to appeal to all the family,
with animated characters, clips and sequences from the show playing on monitor
screens and lots of buttons to press!" He was delighted to welcome Hyde
Fundraisers to the launch day who entertained the visitors with characters
that included a Tetrap, Cyberman, Draconian and Auton in and out of the
exhibition! |
Richard Hollis,
BBC Worldwide's Head of Licensing, said, "The recent announcement by BBC
TV that Doctor Who is returning to our screens means there will soon be
a whole new generation of fans and this exhibition will be the only one
- in the world - to bridge the gap between the old and the new. We hope
it will give visitors an insight into the history of this extraordinary
and uniquely British programme and why it has such enduring appeal. It's
become one of Blackpool's top tourist attractions!'
On November 8th
2009 the Dr Who Museum closed its doors for the final time.

It
was certainly a sad day when the Dr Who Museum closed, a final opportunity
to see the biggest collection of props and costumes from the original
Dr Who series. We will be extending our Blackpool Museum Gallery over
the coming months in tribute - stay tuned!
